An Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is a computerized telecommunications device that provides customers access to financial transactions in a public space without the need for a human clerk or bank teller. Most modern ATMs identify customers by having them insert a card that contains a unique card number and additional security information. Using an ATM, customers can access their bank accounts in order to make cash withdrawals and check their account balances.

 ATMs have an embedded PC in the center of the machine that connects to multiple serial peripherals such as card readers, keypads, touch screens, receipt printers, cash dispensers, etc. The PC connects to these serial devices via a multiport serial board. Some embedded PCs require Low Profile boards due to the limited space available inside a typical ATM.

In China, more and more banks are setting up ATMs to service growing numbers of customers. A local Chinese ATM vendor has even entered the international playing field by winning a large foreign market share and wide customer recognition.
